The Nazareth Catholic School

Nazareth Catholic School was founded in 1953 by the Society of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary following the invitation by the then Emperor Haile Selassie to come to Ethiopia to start a school for young Ethiopian girls in Addis Ababa. To start with, the sisters rented a house in Kebenna near Ager Fiker theatre and started the first school for boys and girls. In 1958, the government offered the sisters the present Nazareth Catholic School compound with a small wooden house for a school. When St. Joseph School for boys was opened in 1960, the boys who were then in Nazareth Catholic School were transferred there. So since 1960 Nazareth Catholic School became a School for girls only.

Since its establishment, the school has given due emphasis in educating Ethiopian girls. The quality education offered to all students who join the school has resulted in tremendous achievement and progress. Needless to say, Nazareth Catholic School has rooted itself on precious governing foresights and produced thousands of young women to contribute to the development of the Nation. The school is also known as the center of excellence. Many girls from low income families have benefited from the scholarship program offered at Nazareth Catholic School. The school’s student capacity in terms of number of students is increasing from year to year and it is posing a challenge to the school. It is with these challenges that the school has prepared a strategic plan that will help and act as a road map for the next five years.
